UNFILTERING A JAAHIL NAMED HAROON CAJEE

Question

A self-proclaimed author by the name of Haroon Cajee calls himself a Jaahil. In a recent post titled: “Based on my Jaahils perspective” comments on various issues on certain Whatsapp groups.

Regarding a powerful article written by Mufti Zameelur Rahman: Avoid ‘Visit My Mosque’ Open Days, Haroon Cajee seeks to undermine it. Please respond.

Answer

His article shared will be shattered into pieces addressing only the first piece.

Jaahil Cajee says:

“This thinking treats Islam like some treasure that must be locked away instead of something we have a duty to share.

Awake O Ummah’s response:

We ask Jaahil Cajee as to why does he not open up the doors of his own house if he really wants to do Dawah work. Why does he restrict the effort of Dawah to the Masjid? Sahaabah Radhiyallahu Anhum did dawah without big posters enticing the Kuffaar to come and enter our Masaajid. Looking at them Radhiyallahu anhum wherever they walked was Dawah. Sahaabah Radhiyallahu anhum tapped into the hearts of individuals before they (the Kuffaar) even entered the Masjid.

You do not give a disbeliever the Mushaf (Quraan Shareef which we recite from) and then tell him to read. You teach him cleanliness first. Based on the Jaahils attempt to use Masaajid as Dawah centers for people of all faith to masquerade we turn to the first house built for mankind:

اِنَّ اَوَّلَ بَيۡتٍ وُّضِعَ لِلنَّاسِ لَـلَّذِىۡ بِبَكَّةَ مُبٰرَكًا وَّهُدًى لِّلۡعٰلَمِيۡنَ‌‌ۚ (96)

Translation:
The first house set up for the people is surely the one in Makkah having blessings and guidance for the entire universe.

Quran Shareef- Surah No. 3 آل عمران

We urge the Jaahil to dispel the fog of his ignorance and acquaint himself with guidance, real guidance and not his perverted moaning. Look back at the verse and be cognisant of the following points:

  1. The first house set up
  2. It is set up for the people
  3. It is the Ka’abah al-Musharrafah
  4. The Ka’bah al Musharrafah is dripping with blessings.
  5. It is a guidance not for just mankind but it navigates and transmits guidance for the entire universe.

Now consider this:

Allah Ta’alaa did not mention Muslims in the verse. The House of Allah is set up for the people and it is a guidance for the entire universe. The Jaahil with his secular polluted brains will now seek to transform our honourable Masjidul Haraam into a place for non Muslims as according to his own words which he spews:

“This thinking treats Islam like some treasure that must be locked away instead of something we have a duty to share.

The Jaahil treats Islam like some place for one and all to urinate upon whenever they feel the need. He has lost all respect for Islam. In fact he and others like him should be punished in public for striving to demolish Islam under names such as “Ummah Unfiltered”.

We ask him ,the Ka’abah al-Musharrafah is a guidance for the entire universe, will he now accuse Allah Ta’alaa of locking it away because they are not allowed in?

In fact towards the end of Rasulullah Sallallahu alaihi wa Sallam’s life, he Sallallahu alaihi wa Sallam expelled all the Jews and Christians not just from Baytullah but from even coming close to the Haramain!

It has been narrated by Ameerul Mu’mineen  ‘Umar b. al-Khattib Radhiyallahu anhu that he heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say:

لأُخْرِجَنَّ الْيَهُودَ وَالنَّصَارَى مِنْ جَزِيرَةِ الْعَرَبِ حَتَّى لاَ أَدَعَ إِلاَّ مُسْلِمًا ‏” ‏”

I will definitely expel the Jews and Christians from the Arabian Peninsula and will not leave any but Muslim.
Sahih Muslim 1767

The Jaahil with a capital J thinks Islam and the Masaajid are cafes where anyone can park wherever they feel like. He will respect the laws of a country but when the laws of Islam are presented then he undermines it for his own whims and desires.

Allah Ta’alaa prevents this mindset of the Jaahil for the place He Ta’alaa called a guidance for the entire universe:

Surah al-Tawbah 9:28

Translation:
“O you who believe! Indeed, the polytheists are najas (impure), so let them not approach al-Masjid al-Haram after this year of theirs. And if you fear poverty, then Allah will enrich you from His bounty, if He wills. Indeed, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise

Based on the Jaahil’s misconstrued understanding of Islam where he claims:

“This thinking treats Islam like some treasure that must be locked away instead of something we have a duty to share.

Cajee and ilk restrict Dawah to Kuffar to only the Masjid. If every Tom, Dick and Mary who do not understand cleanliness is invited to our Masaajid then what happens to the sanctity of the Masjid. Why does Cajee not entertain these thoughts within the confines of his own home? Since when does Islam say Dawah is restricted to the Masaajid?
The Masaajid is built for the remembrance of Allah Ta’alaa. Yes! It is built for the remembrance of Allah Ta’alaa. It is not a museum for tours, henna hand painting, refreshment stations, and CPR training like we will show a clear example of the effects and outcomes of such Jaahil’s claims.

You and I have homes, will we feel comfortable for all and sundry to enter our homes? A drug addict with heroin injections or a group of prostitutes half naked walks in front of the children present or kidnappers walking in?

A Masjid has a specific purpose:

فِىۡ بُيُوۡتٍ اَذِنَ اللّٰهُ اَنۡ تُرۡفَعَ وَيُذۡكَرَ فِيۡهَا اسۡمُهٗۙ يُسَبِّحُ لَهٗ فِيۡهَا بِالۡغُدُوِّ وَالۡاٰصَالِۙ (36)

Translation:
(The guided people worship Allah) in the houses that Allah has permitted to be raised and where His name is recounted and His purity is pronounced, in the morning and in the evening.

Quran – Surah No. 24 النور Verse 36

The Muslim men are being called daily five times to the Masjid yet they are still stuck to everything but the Masjid. When the non Muslims see that Muslim men are convinced of going to the Masjid then when Kuffar are called to Islam then it will have much more of an effect. The Masjid is for Muslim men to attend that is why Mufti Shafee Saheb Rahmatullahi alaihi comments under this verse:

رِجَالٌ ۙ لَّا تُلۡهِيۡهِمۡ تِجَارَةٌ وَّلَا بَيۡعٌ عَنۡ ذِكۡرِ اللّٰهِ وَاِقَامِ الصَّلٰوةِ وَ اِيۡتَآءِ الزَّكٰوةِ‌ۖ
by men whom no trade or sale makes neglectful of the remembrance of Allah, nor from establishing Salah and paying Zakaat
Quran – Surah No. 24 النور Ayah No. 37
Mufti Shafee Saheb Rahmatullahi alaihi comments:
“By the use of the word Rijal (men), there is a hint that only the presence of men is required in the Masaajid. For women the best places are their homes”
Since when did Fuqahaa give a carte blanche fatwa where all Non Muslims including women and children are allowed entry into the Masaajid whenever they feel like?
Sayyiduna Umar Radhiyallahu anhu was about to kill Rasulullah Sallallahu alaihi wa Sallam but his honourable sister did not hand over the verses of the Quraan Shareef. She first taught Sayyiduna Umar Radhiyallahu anhu respect.
Sahaabah Radhiyallahu Anhum did business dealings with the Kuffaar and they affected the hearts of the Kuffaar due to their truthful dealings. They didnt have Masjid open days as is done today under a specific agenda of interfaith.
A revert by the name of Ameen Templeton from Lenasia shared with us his journey to Islam:
“I explored many religions but I was convinced by Islam because I witnessed the respect Islam stresses even before the actions. I asked for the Holy Quraan. It was said to me, “first go and clean up and wash yourself in a specific way. When I was just told this I knew this was the right religion. No other religion told me I have to wash myself before touching their books.”
Look at the incidents unfolding because of those who meddle with the Deen of Islam:

Below is the article of Mufti Zameelur Rahmaan:

Avoid ‘Visit My Mosque’ Open Days

A number of masjids throughout the country have introduced a ‘visit my mosque’ initiative to give non-Muslim residents the opportunity to visit their local masjids and interact with the Muslim community. The purpose of the initiative appears to be to counter negative attitudes towards Islām and Muslims by making non-Muslims feel at ease with their Muslim neighbours.

While adopting means to bring the message of Islām to people is commendable and rewarding, the attitude of many Muslims, including those who have introduced this initiative, is incorrect. The main priority of a Muslim is obedience to the Divine Will. There is no objective, interest or purpose for a Muslim greater than this. However, on questions such as these, rather than obedience and submission to the will of Allāh being a priority, it is unfortunately treated by most people almost as an irrelevance.

To acquire some secondary benefit of dīn or dunyā, it is not permissible to disobey the Creator. There are several examples of where the Prophet (ṣallallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam) and Ṣaḥābah (raḍiyallāhu ‘anhum) disregarded an apparent worldly or religious benefit when it clashed with the clear command of Sharī‘ah. Success of all kinds lies only in obedience to Allāh. Seeking secondary benefits of dīn or dunyā will only ever be of true benefit when it is conducted within the parameters of Allāh’s obedience. If it falls outside of these parameters, there is never any benefit or success, but only loss, no matter what the apparent outcome. [For details, see: Aḥsan al-Fatāwā, 6:35-84]

A great act of disobedience takes place in these masjid open-days, namely the intermingling and interaction of men and women in a, generally, crowded and confined space. Creating such a situation is undoubtedly ḥarām and sinful, and violates core Islāmic principles of modesty and gender segregation. It is all the more egregious that this is done in the masjids, the most sacred and beloved of places to Allāh.

The Qur’ān commands averting the gaze from what is forbidden (Qur’ān, 24:30), while there is no doubt that looking at ḥarām will be inevitable for many who attend these events. In the early period, when men and women would attend ṣalāh together in congregation, efforts were taken to ensure there was no intermingling. (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, 850, 875) Similarly, even in the ṭawāf around the Ka‘bah, efforts were made to keep the men and women separate. (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, 1618; Akhbār Makkah, 1:252; al-Nawādir wa l-Ziyādāt, 8:35) There is generally no attempt in such masjid open-days to avoid intermingling, and, if anything, an impression is given of it being encouraged! [1]

Muslims should not compromise on their values in efforts to create a positive image of Islām. In fact, it is counter-intuitive to compromise on our values when trying to show the positivity of those very values to others. In order to change non-Muslim attitudes towards Muslims, we have only to imbibe the beautiful values and teachings within Islām – of hospitality, charity, kindness and generosity, especially with neighbours. Imām al-Bukhārī reported that a sheep or goat was slaughtered for the eminent Ṣaḥābī, ‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Amr (raḍiyallāhu ‘anhumā), and he ordered that a share be given to his Jewish neighbour first, explaining that he heard the Prophet (ṣallallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam) say: “Jibrīl kept on instructing me about [kindness to] the neighbour, until I thought he will make him entitled to inheritance!” (al-Adab al-Mufrad, 105, 128)

It is only Allāh who is in control of the hearts of people. Our duty is only to pursue the worldly means in a manner that is most pleasing or, at the least, acceptable to Allāh. Only then are we entitled to expect aid and assistance from Allāh – without which no effort, no matter how extensive and no matter how superficially “successful” in the short term, will ever come to true fruition. Allāh, Most Glorious, says: “If you show restraint, and be conscious of Allāh [and His boundaries], their ploys will not harm you in the least. Indeed, Allāh encompasses all that they do.” (Qur’ān, 3:120) He, Most Exalted, says: “If Allāh should assist you, no one can overcome you, but if He should forsake you, who is there to assist you after Him? Upon Allāh alone let the believers put their trust.” (Qur’ān, 3:160)

[1] Note: Circumstances and situations which arise in the land of non-Muslims, that are beyond our control, and which might temporarily constrain us to enter into environments of free-mixing to fulfil a genuine personal need (ḥājah), can never justify introducing such an abomination right into the most sacred of places.

In relation to what is mentioned in the endnote, somebody asked what is meant by “hajah” (genuine personal need). “Hajah” in this context means something that causes unbearable distress and hardship to individuals. (Asbab al-Udul, p. 261) There is no hajah compelling any individual to organise or attend such events.

Another individual claimed that based on the above, it should be prohibited to enter al-Masjid al-Haram. There is an important difference between such open days and al-Masjid al-Haram. In the open days, women are not properly dressed and people are encouraged to mingle and interact, making it close to impossible for attendees and participants to avoid the unlawful. On the other hand, in the Haram, the purpose is not for people to interact, and women are normally covered appropriately. And as mentioned, efforts were taken in the early period to keep men and women separate even in the Haram. The fact that this has not been maintained does not justify introducing the sin of free-mixing into other places.

Mulla ‘Ali al-Qari al-Makki (ca. 930 – 1014 H) describes what the “women of Makkah do today, in terms of mixing with men in that area [i.e. around the Ka’bah]” as “a great abomination” (munkar fahish). (al-Maslak al-Mutaqassit, p. 79)

And before him, another great Makkan Hanafi imam, Ibn al-Diya’ (789 – 853 H), wrote in his detailed work on Hajj: “From the vilest of abominations is what the ignorant amongst the commoners do during Tawaf, mixing with men together with their husbands while their faces are uncovered.” (al-Bahr al-Amiq, p. 1250). Ibn al-Diya’ has another work listing the ills that occurred in the Haram, called Tanzih al-Masjid al-Haram ‘an Bida’ al-Jahalat al-‘Awamm; amongst these, he mentions women coming into the mataf (Tawaf area) and the masjid on auspicious nights and mixing with men. (ibid. p. 34)

A similar compaint was made before Ibn al-Diya’ by the Shafi’i imam, al-‘Izz Ibn Jama’ah (694 – 767 H), who added: “We ask Allah to inspire the ruler to eradicate these abominations.” (Hidayat al-Salik, p. 1022-3; al-Fatawa al-Kubra al-Fiqhiyyah, 1:201-2)
